What Does Charter Mean?
A charter is a transport service hired exclusively for one client or group, outside regular routes and schedules. Instead of buying a spot on a public service — a seat on a commercial flight, slot space on a liner vessel — the client rents the whole vehicle: the aircraft, ship, bus or truck, with a tailor-made itinerary.
The term lives in three worlds:
- Air: the best known. A charter flight is contracted whole, typically for group tourism, sports teams, executives or urgent cargo.
- Maritime: the charter party contract rents a vessel by voyage or by time — the backbone of bulk shipping.
- Ground: staff shuttles or freight trucks dedicated to a single client and route.

When Does a Charter Make Sense in Logistics?
- Emergencies: a stopped production line justifies an air charter for parts — the aircraft costs less than the downtime (the classic rescue of a failed just-in-time; see how JIT works).
- Volume that fills the unit: if your cargo takes the whole truck or vessel, a charter usually beats liner rates.
- Destinations without regular service: mining, energy or agricultural projects in remote areas.
- Peak seasons: retailers charter dedicated units when regular capacity sells out.

In Mexican federal trucking, a freight charter is simply a dedicated haul: the carrier assigns the full unit to one client.
