What Is an LPR Camera?
An LPR camera (License Plate Recognition) is a camera — or a camera-plus-software system — that can automatically read the license plates of vehicles passing in front of it and convert them into text: digits and letters ready to be checked against a database, open a gate, or log an access event.
You will also see it called ALPR (Automatic License Plate Recognition) or ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). All three terms describe the same technology; only the regional acronym changes.
ANPR vs LPR: Is There a Difference?
Functionally, none:
- LPR / ALPR is the dominant term in the Americas.
- ANPR is the European term (where plates are called number plates).
When one vendor offers an "ANPR camera" and another an "LPR camera," they are talking about the same thing. What does vary — a lot — is the quality of the recognition engine behind it.
How Does License Plate Recognition Work?
A modern LPR system chains several computer vision steps:
- Vehicle and plate detection. A detection model locates the plate inside the video frame, even with the vehicle in motion.
- Image normalization. Perspective, lighting, and contrast are corrected; serious systems use infrared illumination to read at night and against headlight glare.

- Format validation. Mexican plates follow per-state and per-vehicle-type patterns; validating the format cuts false positives.
- Action. The validated text is matched against allow/deny lists, logged with timestamp and photo, or triggers a gate to open.
Current systems reach accuracy above 95% in real conditions — rain, night, imperfect angles — something generic CCTV cameras cannot do.

- Vehicle access control for gated communities, corporate campuses, and industrial plants: the gate opens automatically for residents or authorized units.
- Parking facilities: virtual ticket tied to the plate, billing by stay, and car localization.
- Security and surveillance: real-time alerts when a flagged plate crosses a checkpoint.
- Logistics and yards: automatic gate-in/gate-out logging for trucks, tied to appointments and shipping orders.
- Tolling and traffic counting: vehicle counting and classification without stopping the flow.
What to Consider Before Installing an LPR System
- Camera angle and height: reliable reading demands correct geometry; not every existing camera will do.
- Infrared illumination for night operation.
- Domestic vs. foreign plates: if your operation sees US or Central American plates, the engine must support those formats.
- Integration: the real value is connecting the read to your access control, ERP, or security platform — not the isolated read.
- Privacy: define data retention and log access according to applicable data protection law.
Plate recognition is one of the most mature applications of computer vision: affordable hardware, accurate models, and a clear return in security and operations.
