What Is an LPR Camera?
An LPR camera (License Plate Recognition) is a camera — or a camera-plus-software system — that can automatically read the license plates of vehicles passing in front of it and convert them into text: digits and letters ready to be checked against a database, open a gate, or log an access event.
You will also see it called ALPR (Automatic License Plate Recognition) or ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). All three terms describe the same technology; only the regional acronym changes. What separates an LPR camera from a regular security camera isn't the sensor — it's the software: a conventional camera records video for someone to review later; an LPR camera analyzes every frame as it happens, decides whether a plate is present, reads it, and triggers an action, all without a person in the loop.
ANPR vs LPR: Is There a Difference?
Functionally, none:
- LPR / ALPR is the dominant term in the Americas.
- ANPR is the European term (where plates are called number plates).
When one vendor offers an "ANPR camera" and another an "LPR camera," they are talking about the same thing. What does vary — a lot — is the quality of the recognition engine behind it: how well it reads dirty, blurry, backlit plates, or plates on a vehicle moving at street speed. Before comparing vendors on price alone, it's worth asking for a test run on real footage from your own site instead of trusting a spec sheet.
How Does License Plate Recognition Work?
A modern LPR system chains several computer vision steps:
- Vehicle and plate detection. A detection model locates the plate inside the video frame, even with the vehicle in motion.

Real-world accuracy isn't a fixed number you can promise upfront — it depends on camera angle and height, sensor resolution, vehicle speed, and lighting conditions. Without LPR, the flow is manual: the guard stops the unit, asks for ID, looks up the plate on a printed list or a spreadsheet, and writes down the entry and exit time by hand. Every step is a chance for a data-entry error and a line that grows during peak hours.
With an LPR camera at the entry booth, the order flips: the camera reads the plate before the truck reaches the gate, the system checks it automatically against scheduled appointments or the list of authorized carriers, and only then decides. What to Consider Before Installing an LPR System
- Camera angle and height: reliable reading demands correct geometry — the camera needs to "see" the plate almost head-on, not at a sharp angle; not every camera already on site can be repurposed as a plate reader.
- Infrared illumination for night operation and against headlight glare.
- Domestic vs. foreign plates: in Mexico, each state issues and manages its own plates, and formats vary by vehicle use — private, cargo, transport, trailer, motorcycle, and more. - Integration: the real value is connecting the read to your access control, ERP, or security platform — not the isolated read. A plate that gets read and dropped into a table nobody queries changes nothing about the operation.
- Privacy: Mexico's federal data protection law (LFPDPPP) requires visible video-surveillance notices at the access point, disclosure of how that footage is used in your privacy notice, a documented retention period for the reads and photos, and a way for people to exercise their ARCO rights over that data. Settle this before you turn the cameras on, not after.
Plate recognition is one of the most mature applications of computer vision: affordable hardware, accurate models when the install is done right, and a clear return in security and operations.

Does an LPR camera work at night or in the rain?
Yes, as long as the install is designed for it: dedicated infrared illumination, the right angle, and a sensor suited to low light. Without those conditions, any system — LPR or not — misses reads at night or in heavy rain, so the right question isn't "is the software good?" but "is the site installed correctly?"
What's the difference between LPR and a regular security camera?
